DRAMATURGY
Steel Magnolias is a
comedy/drama play about the bond among a group of Southern women in
northwest Louisiana. It is written by Robert Harling, based on his
experience with the death of his younger sister, Susan Harling Robinson.
As her best friend and closest sibling, Harling found it very difficult
to cope with her death. He was advised by many of his friends to write
about his feelings as a coping method. It began as a short story and
evolved into a full length play as Harling didn’t feel that a short
story adequately conveyed the complexity of the relationships and the
emotions that existed with the characters. He felt it important to
include the way the characters utilized humor and lighthearted
conversations to assist them in coping with the seriousness of the
underlying situations. The title suggest the “female characters are as
delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.” The magnolia specifically
references a magnolia tree they are arguing about at the beginning.
The action centers on Truvy’s beauty parlor and the women who
regularly gather there. The story begins on the morning of Shelby’s
wedding to Jackson and covers events over the next three years,
including Shelby’s decision to have a child despite having Type 1
diabetes and the complications that result from the decision. There is
also a glimpse of the unlikely friendship between Clairee and Ouiser;
Annells’s transformation from a shy, anxious newcomer in town to a
good-time girl and then to a revival-tent Christian; and Truvy’s
relationships with the men in her family. Although the main story line
involves Shelby, her mother and Shelby’s medical battles, the underlying
group-friendship among all six women is
prominent throughout the drama.
As Described by the Publisher:
A first play which met with immediate critical and popular acceptance
in its premier production by New York's WPA Theatre. Concerned with a
group of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor, the play
is alternately hilarious and touching—and, in the end, deeply revealing
of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of
its characters. "Harling has given his women sharp, funny dialogue…The
play builds to a conclusion that is deeply moving." —NY Daily News. "…a
skillfully crafted, lovingly evoked picture of eccentricity in the
small-town South…Robert Harling is a new voice in the theatre and the
qualities of STEEL MAGNOLIAS suggest he may be an important one."
—Drama-Logue. "…suffused with humor and tinged with tragedy." —NY Post.
THE STORY:
The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana,
where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done.
Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or
not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses
shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I'm
not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric
millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local
social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in
town), is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled with hilarious
repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal
collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the
spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life.
The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also
draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its
characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned

production of “Grease.” Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former
circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun
from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe
ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her
